Sunderland, which is in the north-east of England, is a seaside resort with a modern marina. The city has a large shopping centre, an Edwardian theatre and a Winter Gardens. Southwick village was developed for workers in the nearby shipyards and coalmine. These are no longer in existence and there is high unemployment. Southwick is connected to the city centre by Wearmouth Bridge. The school is not far from Sunderland AFC football ground 'The Stadium of Light'. There have been many links between Sunderland AFC and our school. Sunderland is steeped in history. Close to the school is Hylton Castle, which was built about a thousand years ago. The castle is said to have a ghost called 'The Cauld Lad'. Another famous local legend is 'The Lambton Worm'. Some of our pupils danced as the Lambton Worm in street performances organised by Creative Partnerships in Durham and Sunderland. About 2 km from our school is the Anglo-Saxon church of St Peter's, which was built around 650AD. Penshaw Monument is a copy of a Greek temple. It stands on a hill in south Sunderland. Not far from Sunderland is Durham City, which stands on the River Wear. The city has a beautiful Norman cathedral. A huge modern metal sculpture called 'Angel of the North' stands on a hill in the nearby town of Gateshead.
